Ajax has a distinctive origin tied to Canada’s wartime legacy. The town was named after HMS Ajax, a Royal Navy cruiser that played a key role in the Battle of the River Plate during World War II. The area was developed as a defense industry hub, with the Defense Industries Limited munitions plant employing thousands during the war. After the war, the land and facilities were repurposed into a growing community that evolved rapidly throughout the second half of the 20th century.

Unlike many other GTA towns that grew organically from farming communities, Ajax was a planned community, built from the ground up.
